Dry Dock

A dry dock takes a vessel close to the gate by pumping out the water. It is always advisable to make use of the tidal variation during design of a dry dock. This helps to reduce the need of pumping. In an ideal dry dock, water from ocean side is allowed to move to the dock during low tide after the arrangement of vessel blocks. Sluice valves are used for the entry of water. Steel material is used for the construction of floating dry dock which is a hollow structure. When a vessel has to receive for repair, floating dry dock is sunk to the required depth by allowing buoyancy chambers to be filled with water. Floating dry docks which are moored in deep and calm waters are able to move from one port to another. Some other commonly used vessel(ship) repair arrangements are slipway, marine railway and shiplift.
