The work piece is clamped in the vice. Slip gauges or gauge blocks are used for setting the accurate cutting depth. While shaping the bevels it should be observed that there is exact parallelism with the bearing surface. This is to avoid drilling at oblique angles. Breaking and hooking of the work piece is prevented grooving tool is adjusted by using very little feed. The groove is cut with a circular saw often before shaping the bevels. For measuring length, width, height, width of the groove, vernier caliper and depth gauge are used. A straight edge is used for checking the accuracy of the bevels. For monitoring squareness of the outside surfaces try square is used. For oblique surfaces protractor is employed.
