Testing of geotextiles

Geotextiles are now a prime material used by construction industry. The ten main varieties of geotextiles are knitted geotextiles, composite geotextiles, woven geotextiles, nonwoven geotextiles, webbings, mats, nets, formed plastic sheets, grids and prefabricated composite structures. These geotextiles are extensively used in road construction, rail construction, sports fields’ construction, drainage construction, dam construction, coastal and river protection, bridge construction etc. The properties of geotextiles which are important in view of applications are mass per unit area, specific gravity, thickness, tensile strength, trapezoidal tear strength, puncture resistance, penetration resistance, pullout resistance, burst strength, friction behavior, sewn seam strength, permittivity, permeability, transmittivity, porosity, clogging, endurance, ultraviolet degradation and biological degradation. Appropriate test methods have to be chosen keeping application in mind. Usually physical and mechanical data obtained from different testing methods are used for specification and selection of geotextiles.
