Filler slab roofs

These are solid reinforced concrete slabs with some positive modifications. In these slabs, in the tension zone, concrete is partially replaced by a filler material. A cheaper and lighter material is used as a filler material. A few examples are bricks, Mangalore tiles, stabilized mud blocks, hollow concrete blocks and hollow clay tile blocks. Selection of filler material and its shape and size is not that easy to fix. This can be fixed by a careful study of slab thickness, code guidelines on spacing of reinforcement bars and desired ceiling finish. The amount or quantity of concrete in the tension zone of the slab that is to be replaced by filler material depends on the two parameters mainly. They are thickness of the solid slab and shape of the filler material.
