To avoid slipping in a belt drive, chain drives are used. Chains are rigid links wrapped over wheels. Sprockets are toothed wheels with chains over it. The chain-sprocket system offers a better velocity ratio without slipping. For hoisting and hauling purposes, crane chains are used. Oval shaped or square shaped chains are used here. These types of chains are widely used in marine works, cranes and dredges. Conveyer chains are used in elevators and conveyers. The material used for the processing of chains is malleable cast iron. For the transmission of power, power transmitting chains are used. In brush roller chain, outer plates, inner plates, pins, bushes and rollers are used. In inverted tooth or silent chain, proper lubrication required for durable service. Chain drives consume less space. Lack of slipping will lead to a perfect velocity ratio. High transmission efficiency and fewer loads on the shafts are other positive points. But production cost is high.
