Battery is a cheap and compact devise in which two or more galvanic cells are connected in series or parallel. Here chemical energy is stored in the form of active materials. This is converted into electrical energy through redox reactions. Thus a battery acts as a portable source of electrical energy. Development in microelectronics leads to demand for portable gadgets and hence portable batteries. They are used in calculators, digital watches, pace makers, hearing aids, portable computers, electronically controlled cameras, car engines, stand-by power supplies, emergency lighting, electroplating, industrial traction, telecommunication, military applications and space applications.
