Optical clocks

Life span of optical clock is almost two billion years. The basic concept is related to laser. Lasers measure the frequency with which electrons in atoms vibrate. In a latest development, researchers fabricated a clock in which measurement of vibrations of electrons in mercury ions possible and this can go 1.7 billion years without missing a beat. Revolutions are expected now in the field of global poisoning systems which can track planes, ships and cars. GPS devices receive microwave signals sent by satellites and by measuring the time these take to arrive, can pinpoint the location of an object on earth within 10 meters.
